Government Management Training – Texas

Government Supervisor Seeks Management Training for Staff in Texas…

Is that you?

Whether you’re in Austin, Houston, Dallas, or the federal complex in San Antonio, you’re looking for some good training for the supervisors in your agency.

You know they need some refreshers and reinforcement in things like:

  • Hiring the right people the first time around
  • Firing people (it can be done, even in government)
  • Having the guts to be honest on performance appraisals
  • Developing emerging leaders (those remaining after the baby boomers turn in their retirement papers)
  • Mentoring rising stars
  • Recognizing and rewarding employees (not just for showing up, but those who truly do a great job for your constituents)
  • Reminding employees of the mission and not letting people just “go through the motions”
  • Expecting the best from people rather than just “good enough”

Good Enough for Government Work  (get a free book – keep reading…)

Have you heard that phrase – “good enough for government work?” It probably makes you mad.

Too many people have laughed off a mediocre effort saying, “oh well, that’s good enough for government work!”

Well, we can’t stand for just “good enough.”

US taxpayers demand it.
Texas politicians should campaign on it.
Government employees should be outraged by it!

Especially in this economy, we cannot afford to subsidize mediocre (or worse) performance on the job.

And you, as a government manager, can actually do something about it!

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly…

There are some very talented, dedicated employees working for the government.

But there are also some people who should have never been hired. Or if they were hired, they should have been cut loose during their initial probation. But now they’re entrenched, and you and your colleagues have to deal with them. (I know – I worked in state and federal government for 23 years.)

It’s a challenge for the supervisors. They have more on their plates than they can manage. And while they are very capable in their technical field, such as accounting, programming, inspections, or engineering, they do not have as much training in managing employees.

That’s where we come in. This management training is designed specifically for government managers.

Typically done in a one day seminar, this training focuses on excellence and accountability in your agency. And it starts with supervisors.

The big boss in Washington or Austin can issue directives or initiatives, but in a government agency, it’s the first line supervisor and middle managers that interact with employees to make sure the work gets done and the constituents are satisfied.

Those first line supervisors and middle managers will benefit most from this training.

Free Book

If you’re serious about improving the culture at your agency and sincerely want to help your managers do a better job, just send me an email to info@KyleEastham.com and I’ll send you a free copy of my book, Good Enough for Government Work – How to Squash Mediocrity in Government.

No cost. No obligation. I just want to get the message out there.

Don’t be put off by the title. It’s not bashing government employees. It’s about not settling for just “good enough.”

Training Format

Government managers hate to sit through hours of lecture and boring PowerPoint slides. (At least I always did!)

We’ll mix it up with this training and incorporate:

  •  group discussion
  • case studies
  • role plays
  • a teambuilding exercise
  • examples of the best and worst of government employees
  • paper exercises
  • videos

7 Steps

We’ll walk through 7 steps you can take to build and enhance accountability and excellence in your government agency. Topics include:

1)       You need to fire someone (tough to do, but it can be, and should be
done. And everyone in the office knows who it should be!)

2)       Develop emerging leaders. Great running backs do not necessarily make
great head coaches. It’s a different set of skills.

3)       Instill pride in the job & department. (Think Navy SEAL’s…)

4)       Find a mentor/Be a mentor.

5)       Insist upon & reward excellence.  (before that star employee leaves
your agency for someone who will appreciate them - that’s very frustrating
           and expensive)

6)       Hire & promote based on character. You can then teach the required
            technical skills.

7)       Stop lying to employees on performance appraisals. Employees
know who is doing a great job and who is a slug. Step up and be the
supervisor. Call them like you see them.

Bonus:  No extra travel costs!

Since I’m right down the road, there are no travel costs added on to the cost of the training.

If you flew someone in from Atlanta or Chicago for your training in Texas, you’d be looking at $1000 in additional costs for airfare, hotel, rental car, and per diem.

That’s not in the budget! Get proven, top-quality training from someone right in your own backyard and save some money!
